The oSTEM society is a chapter-based non-profit organization, that serves lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and ally (LGBTQA) communities in the STEM disciplines. Members rely on the national board, oSTEM Incorporated, for resources, direction, and sustainability, allowing chapters to focus on educating and developing LGBTQA STEM students across the nation. Founded in 2009, oSTEM has grown ten-fold in just four years, expanding from 5 chapters to over 50 today. This growth represents the coordination of national oSTEM meetings, close mentoring of student leaders, and the board’s participation in conferences around the country. In addition to providing workshops and other professional opportunities at national conferences, oSTEM Incorporated supports its chapters by encouraging collaborations, building new infrastructure, and through its shared resources, newsletters, and mentorships. Mission: oSTEM seeks to educate, empower, and engage a diverse community to identify, address, and advocate for the needs of LGBTQA students in the STEM fields through mentorship connections, networking opportunities, strategic collaborations, and professional/leadership development.
