American Institute for Aeronautics & Astronautics

For more than 70 years, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics has been the principal society of the aerospace engineer and scientist. But we haven’t always been AIAA, or even one organization. In 1963, the two great aerospace societies of the day merged. The American Rocket Society and the Institute of Aerospace Science* joined to become AIAA. Both brought long and eventful histories to the relationship – histories that stretched back to 1930 and 1932 respectively, a time when rocketry was the stuff of science fiction and the aviation business was still in its infancy. Each society left its distinct mark on AIAA. The merger combined the imaginative, risk-taking, shoot-for-the-moon outlook of Project Mercury-era rocket, missile, and space professionals with the more established, well-recognized, industry-building achievers of the aviation community. The resulting synergy has benefited aerospace ever since. Today, with more than 31,000 members, AIAA is the world’s largest professional society devoted to the progress of engineering and science in aviation, space, and defense. The Institute continues to be the principal voice, information resource, and publisher for aerospace engineers, scientists, managers, policymakers, students, and educators. AIAA is also the go-to resource for stimulating professional accomplishment and standards-driven excellence in all areas of aerospace for prominent corporations and government organizations worldwide. AIAA’s vision is to be the shaping, dynamic force in the aerospace profession – the forum for innovation, technical excellence, and global leadership. AIAA’s mission is to address the professional needs and interests of the past, current, and future aerospace workforce and to advance the state of aerospace science, engineering, technology, operations, and policy to benefit our global society. STEM Ed Initiatives: Professional Development: The premier association representing professionals in aeronautics and astronautics, AIAA has been a conduit for furthering professional development for more than sixty years. AIAA is committed to keeping the aerospace professional at their technical best. AIAA offers short courses, distance learning courses, development tutorials, and online courses for continuing education in many topics in aeronautics and astronautics. AIAA Educator Associates: K-12 Teachers can supplement their efforts to bring the “real world” of science and math into your classroom by signing on as an AIAA Educator Associate. AIAA Educator Associates gain educational materials, online activities, in-class experiences and mentors, financial resources, and more. The AIAA Foundation provides classroom grants of up to $200 per teacher for classroom demonstration kits, classroom science supplies, or other materials that energize science, math, and technology hands-on learning. $1,000 limit per school per year. Kid’s Place: The AIAA Kid’s Place web resource provides flight simulations, books and movies, puzzles and games, homework help, and K-12 Curriculum packets. Design Competitons: The AIAA Foundation sponsors several design competitions every year, which ask students to solve real-world design problems. These respected competitions give America’s best student designers a chance to put their talent front and center for the aerospace world. Scholarships: Through an expanding scholarship program, AIAA awards 30 scholarships annually to undergraduate students and 13 to graduate students in science or engineering programs related to AIAA’s aerospace mission. Our goal is to attract top science and engineering students to aerospace fields … to provide high-visibility recognition of these students and their work … to furnish financial assistance to aerospace students in need … and to assure the availability of talented professionals that the aerospace industry will require in the years ahead. Textbook Adoption: AIAA is one of the world’s leading publishers of textbooks for aerospace engineering programs. Our distinguished AIAA Education Series of highly specialized textbooks and monographs serves students and researchers around the globe. Program Accreditation: The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics submits program accreditations to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology for university engineering programs which include “aerospace,” “aeronautical,” “astronautical,” and similar modifiers in their titles and meet AIAA’s curriculum standards. Student Chapters: AIAA currently has over 160 active student branches, including 12 foreign student branches, with a total active membership of over 5,000 students worldwide. Your student branch is your base of operations in AIAA during your college years, and it’s an open door to professional activities, recognition, and contacts that would otherwise be unavailable to students.
